I don’t use protective filters. I used to when I first started, but I find that they’re generally harder to clean than the standard lens coatings, and they can produce reflections/artifacts in images. I will shoot with the lens hood in place almost 100% of the time.

Adrian, I think the answer depends on how you shoot. If you’re often switching between the two zooms but are pretty much OK with the range, a second body makes more sense.
