Overall, a 24-70mm f/2.8 is my go-to for music photography. It covers most everything for general event photography and music is very well covered by this range. Going back to your question, I think it would depend if you want to move to full frame or stick with DX right now. A 24-70mm would be ideal on a full frame camera like the Z 5 or Z 6II, for example. For a smaller venue, you might lose a bit on the wide end with the APS crop otherwise.

Thank you so much for this article, I found it so helpful. I’m a 19-year-old music journalist looking to start doing some concert photography at a local venue for DIY bands here! I have a very basic beginner Nikon z50, 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 lens. The venue I regularly shoot at doesn’t have crazy low lighting and it’s super small and photographers can get really up front to the stage, so right now it works pretty well if I put it at f3.5. But thinking of the long term, I’m definitely going to save up for a lens with a wider aperture. What lens would you suggest and what focal length? Or would you suggest I save up first to upgrade the body? I think I’m probably going to stick to the Nikon series.
